Our story

The Walk Foundation NPO

Our mission

To provide quality orthopaedic surgery to patients who cannot afford it, while simultaneously educating medical staff and orthopaedic surgeons to provide the same care to an even broader base of patients.

Our vision

Our vision is to provide quality and timeous orthopaedic surgery to individuals who need it.

Having worked in impoverished communities in under-developed regions of the world, the founders of the Walk Foundation have seen first-hand the effect that loss of mobility can have on an individual and ultimately a family.

An overburdened health system can delay treatment and result in worsening disability.

Our vision is one where we provide the most optimal treatment as soon as it’s needed to ensure that an individual’s independence is never lost.

Our story

Founded in 2020, the Walk Foundation recruits specialist orthopaedic surgeons to perform various orthopaedic procedures at no cost to patients.

Patients or institutions are able to apply for assistance via our online application system.

The degree of assistance provided by the foundation varies according to the requirements of the patient.

Fully-funded’ procedures mean that everything from the hospital stay, to the surgical fees and implants are paid for by the Walk Foundation.

Partially-funded’ procedures mean that the Walk Foundation would be able to cover part of the expense that cannot be paid for by the patient/healthcare funder eg. the prosthesis or a co-payment towards the procedure.

Whatever the needs of the patient, the Walk Foundation aims to ensure that patients get their required treatment, regardless of their financial situation.

The Walk Foundation was founded by a group of 3 specialist orthopaedic surgeons: Dr Singh; Dr Chivers and Dr Coetzee.

With over 50 years of combined orthopaedic surgery experience in both the private and state sector as well as subspecialist fellowships (‘superspecialty’), these 3 surgeons will either perform the procedures themselves or recruit other volunteer orthopaedic surgeons.  All surgeons who are recruited and registered specialists with the HPCSA.

The Walk Foundation aims to get patients walking, no matter what their problem.  From children with cerebral palsy to hip and knee arthritis in the elderly, the Walk Foundation provides orthopaedic surgery services for all patients from all backgrounds.

Simply apply for assistance online and let the Walk Foundation get you walking.
